About the Role
We are working with a well-established firm in Sydney that is looking to add a dedicated Criminal Lawyer to its growing practice. This opportunity is perfect for a lawyer with at least 2 years post-admission experience who is passionate about criminal law and eager to take on challenging matters. You’ll handle a diverse range of criminal cases, working closely with respected senior practitioners and advocating for clients at all stages of the criminal justice process.
Key Responsibilities
Case Management & Advocacy:
• Manage a variety of criminal matters from police interviews through to final hearings and appeals
• Appear in Local, District, and Supreme Courts for mentions, bail applications, and contested hearings
• Draft submissions, briefs, and advices tailored to client needs
• Engage and brief counsel where appropriate
Client Interaction & Advisory:
• Provide clear, practical advice to clients on criminal charges, court procedure, and potential outcomes
• Maintain strong client relationships with empathy and professionalism
• Ensure clients are well-informed throughout each stage of their matter
Team & Administrative Support:
• Work collaboratively with partners, associates, and support staff to achieve the best client outcomes
• Assist with mentoring junior lawyers or graduates when needed
• Maintain accurate file records, billing, and compliance with court deadlines
What We’re Looking For
Experience:
• Minimum 2 years post-admission experience in criminal law, criminal defence, or litigation with a significant criminal caseload
• Prior advocacy experience in court essential (bail applications, contested hearings, or sentencing matters)
Skills:
• Strong drafting skills and a keen legal mind for analysis and strategy
• Confident oral advocate with excellent courtroom presence
• Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and compassion
• Proficiency with practice management software and document systems
